Kick-Off Times Explained: How to Read a Fixture List in Your Own Timezone
Two websites, one fixture, two different kick-off times. Neither is lying. They are quoting different clocks, and unless one of them tells you which, you cannot know which applies to you.
Almost every fixture list is published in the local time of the country hosting the match, or in the local time of the publisher — and those are frequently not the same thing. This guide covers how to read one correctly, and the specific weeks each year when the arithmetic everyone relies on quietly stops working.
Fixture times are local to somewhere, and the label matters
A Premier League fixture at "17:30" means 17:30 in Britain. A La Liga fixture at "21:00" means 21:00 in Spain. Neither statement tells a reader in Toronto, Lagos or Sydney anything useful until it is anchored to a named zone.
Three labels do most of the work in European football:
- GMT — Greenwich Mean Time, Britain's winter clock, identical to UTC+0
- BST — British Summer Time, Britain's clock from late March to late October, UTC+1
- CET / CEST — Central European Time and its summer form, covering most of continental Europe at UTC+1 and UTC+2 respectively
The most common error in published listings is treating GMT and BST as interchangeable. They differ by a full hour, and Britain spends about seven months of the year on BST. A schedule that says "GMT" all year round is wrong from late March to late October — and it is wrong in the direction that makes people miss kick-off.
Why the "usual" time difference is wrong twice a year
Here is the trap that catches even careful readers.
Most people carry a rule of thumb: London is five hours ahead of New York, one hour behind Berlin, and so on. That rule holds for most of the year and then breaks, because countries do not change their clocks on the same date.
- The United States switches on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November
- The European Union switches on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October

The spring gap is the dangerous one. It lasts three weeks, it covers a busy part of the European season, and anyone converting a kick-off time using their year-round mental arithmetic will be an hour out for the whole of it.
The southern hemisphere inverts this again — Australia and New Zealand shift in the opposite direction to Europe — so the Europe-to-Sydney offset moves several times a year.
How to convert a kick-off time correctly
The reliable method is short.
- Find the zone the time is quoted in. If a listing does not say, treat the time as unverified rather than assuming.
- Convert through UTC, not through a remembered offset. UTC does not observe daylight saving, so it is the one fixed point in the system.
- Check the date, not just the time. A 20:00 kick-off in Europe is the following morning in much of Asia and Oceania. The day of the week changes, and people miss matches by a day rather than an hour.
- Re-check anything scheduled near a clock change. Late March, late October and early November are when stored conversions go stale.
